Commander of Golani Brigade during Yom Kippur War dies

Israel Defense Forces reserve Major General Amir Drori, who was the commander of the Golani Brigade during the 1973 Yom Kippur war, died on Saturday during a trip in the Negev Desert. Drori, 68, felt unwell during the organized trip through a southern Negev river bed. The Mount Negev search and rescue unit dispatched a helicopter and doctor to evacuated Drori to hospital but declared him dead at the scene. Drori's body was brought to the Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva. Drori commanded the Golani infantry brigade during the 1973 Yom Kippur War and led the recapture of Mount Hermon after it initially fell to Syrian forces. During the Lebanon war, Drori headed the IDF's Northern Command and served as deputy chief of staff and headed the army's operations division from 1986 to 1987. While an officer in the Golani Brigade, Drori won a medal of honor for the 1960 operation in Tawfik. Since his release from the IDF, Drori has served as the director of the Antiquities and Archaeological Authority.
