Pro-Syrian Legislator Is Named Lebanon's Next Prime Minister
President Émile Lahoud of Lebanon on Friday appointed a pro-Syrian businessman and member of Parliament as prime minister-designate, breaking weeks of deadlock over the formation of a Lebanese government and paving the way for parliamentary elections to be held on schedule in late May or June. The new prime minister, Najib Mikati, has strong ties to President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, but he still won broad support from Lebanon's opposition movement in consultations between the government and Parliament over the choice.

Hammering the Wrong Nails
The 9/11 Commission's 'Solution' Won't Fix the Real Intelligence Failures. Richard A. Posner does not simply point to feet of clay. He attacks them with hammer, tongs and clarity of insight when it comes to the dangers of the ragged overhaul of U.S. intelligence that Congress and the Bush administration now pursue.

Checks for changes
British Prime Minister Tony Blair will open an international conference in London tomorrow whose goal is to help the Palestinians help themselves. Blair, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and many others - from the West, the Arab states and international institutions - will put their heads together with new Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and his colleagues over how to advance the Palestinians toward their goal of establishing a state that will live alongside Israel in peace.
Labour denies new election poster is anti-semitic
Labour denied a proposed new election poster campaign was anti-semitic, after it transposed the heads of Michael Howard and Oliver Letwin - who are both Jewish - on to pigs. The ad, which is supposed to play on the idea "pigs might fly", bears the caption "The day the tory sums ad up", features both the leader of the opposition and the shadow chancellor as pigs with wings.
Russia Keeping Busy in Affairs of the Mideast
The Kremlin attempts to balance American influence in the region by quietly launching its own initiatives with Iran and Syria. Russia had grudging congratulations this week for the election in Iraq, but President Vladimir V. Putin is making it increasingly clear that the Kremlin does not intend to let the U.S. dictate the future landscape of the Middle East.

Israeli officials wary as Russia plays disruptive role in Middle East
A projected billion-dollar arms sale to Syria is the latest sign of a major shift in Russia’s Middle East policy — and analysts are asking how dangerous it might be for regional stability and for Israel. In what they see as an ongoing bid to regain its lost global influence, Russia — like the former Soviet Union — has been developing regional ties as a counterweight to American influence in the Middle East, analysts say.

After U.S. Push, Israel Drops Demand For Quick Disbanding of Terror Groups
With a push from the Bush administration, Israel is dropping its demand that Palestinian Authority leaders immediately dismantle terrorist organizations, American and Israeli diplomatic sources said. The change reflects the growing belief in Jerusalem and Washington that demanding a crackdown on armed terrorist groups, including Hamas, would hurt the ability of Mahmoud Abbas, the American favorite in the Palestinian presidential election.

Azzam’s Release Marks Mubarak’s Withdrawal as Palestinians’ Patron
In the first week of March, a senior Israeli intelligence official visiting Cairo collected a Note from president Hosni Mubarak informing prime minister Ariel Sharon that he had decided to let Azzam Azzam go. He was only waiting for the right moment to free the Israeli Druze textile engineer who was sentenced in 1997 to 15 years in jail on a charge of spying for Israel.
Azzam is freed, in exchange for six would-be murderers
Azzam Azzam, of the Druze town of Merer in the Galilee, crossed into Israel at 12:34 this afternoon, after being held in Egyptian prison since November 1996 on charges of espionage. Re-thinking the need for peace with Syria
Syria has spent what little defense budget it has on building a chemical and possibly biological stockpile of warheads and surface-to-surface missiles that can strike most of populated Israel. With Syria's once powerful military obsolete, Israel's leaders may conclude its better to hold on to the Golan Heights. There is little pressure from the conservatives to reach out to Assad's hand and resume peace negotiations.

Rafael "Raful" Eitan, former Israeli army chief, was murdered
On November 23, Brig.-Gen. Rafael "Raful" Eitan was found dead in the waters of Ashdod port. Gen. Eitan was IDF Chief Of Staff in the 1980s when Ariel Sharon was Minister Of Defence. There are now widespread suspicions of foul play in Israel, in part because of a report widely read by the author of this article.
